Report: Dejphon Chansiri takes major first step in Sheffield Wednesday rebuild after Danny Rohl meeting

Sheffield Wednesday have set out on their rebuild under Danny Rohl, after securing their Championship status for another season.

The summer ahead for Sheffield Wednesday would’ve been a pivotal one regardless of whether or not they stayed in the Championship this season.

But the fact that they beat the drop means that this summer can be a very prosperous one, as well as a pivotal one in the club’s long-term trajectory.

Rohl now looks increasingly likely to stay in S6 given the Owls’ Championship status, though it’s long been obvious that he wants changes, and that owner Dejphon Chansiri would need to make those changes in order to keep Rohl invested in the club.

And those changes are getting underway already.

Sheffield Wednesday make improvements to training ground

Whilst Rohl will deliver results and a rebuild on the pitch, Chansiri needs to make the changes off it.

Rohl hinted earlier in the season that he wanted changes to the facilities at the club, including the training ground, and that was reiterated after it was revealed Rohl and Chansiri held positive talks over the former’s future at the club after the 2-0 win vs Sunderland on Saturday.

And now The Star say that Chansiri is facilitating improvements to the Middlewood training ground with both pitches being re-turfed, as well the Middlewood ‘dome’ being ‘resurrected’ after being down for the entirety of the 2023/24 season.

The Hillsborough pitch, which was a cause for concern at times this season, is also set to be re-turfed, and there’s also talks of further improvements and extensions to the buildings at Middlewood.

The one other thing Sheffield Wednesday need to do this summer

Rohl will be delighted to see Chansiri taking action so soon after the end of the season, and so too will the fans who’ve long wanted to see positive changes being made off the pitch.

And whilst these changes are perhaps long overdue and very necessary for the club, there’s also the not-so-small matter of the first-team squad.

Chansiri needs to manage the finances tightly this summer as Rohl won’t want to be limited to purely free agents and loan signings, although that looks set to make up a huge part of his summer transfer haul.

The Owls still have a number of players out of contract in the summer and loan deals coming to an end too.

So managing funding between training ground improvements, pitch resurfacing, and then funding for the transfer market will be key in getting Sheffield Wednesday prepared for next season.

But so far, after the update on positive talks between Rohl and Chansiri and then this latest update on Middlewood improvements, everything seems to be shaping up to be a very positive summer in S6.
