Report: Whether Man United could sack Erik ten Hag before facing Newcastle United next week

Newcastle United are preparing to face Manchester United next week, as rumours continue to circulate regarding Erik ten Hag’s future at Old Trafford.

It looks like it has been a decisive weekend in the Premier League, with Newcastle United moving above the Red Devils in the table. Eddie Howe‘s side are now sixth after battering Burnley 4-1, while Man United endured a nightmare visit to Selhurst Park.

Newcastle were recently played off the park by Crystal Palace, but the Eagles were even more dominant against Erik ten Hag’s side. They won 4-0, with Toon transfer target Michael Olise netting a spectacular brace.

The defeat leaves Man United down in eighth, with Chelsea also leapfrogging them thanks to their 5-0 thrashing of West Ham United.

Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s club are in danger of missing out on Europe completely, which would be catastrophic for them.

Man United make immediate decision on Erik ten Hag’s future

Recent results suggest that Erik ten Hag is not the man to lead Man United into the future. There have been rumours in recent months about the new owners replacing him, and now it feels inevitable.

However, a change will not take place before Newcastle United head to Old Trafford on May 15th.

According to the Telegraph, Manchester United are going to keep Ten Hag at least until after the FA Cup final on May 25th. They have no plans to relieve him of his duties before then.

Ten Hag will be in charge when Newcastle United face Man United

That means that Ten Hag will be Man United manager for next week’s crucial Premier League clash at Old Trafford.

It should be a decisive game in the race for Europe, with Newcastle suddenly in pole position. The Magpies are two points ahead of Man United with three games to go, while they also have fifth-place Tottenham Hotspur within their sights.

Given Man United’s struggles, Newcastle fans are relishing this trip to the North West. The Magpies have already won emphatically at Old Trafford this season, beating Ten Hag’s side 3-0 in the Carabao Cup. Howe also triumphed in the league at St James’ Park, with Anthony Gordon scoring the only goal of the game.

In fact, Howe has mostly got the better of Ten Hag. Annoyingly, the only game the Dutchman has won against Howe was the most important – the 2023 Carabao Cup final.

Since that defeat at Wembley, Howe has had Ten Hag’s number on every occasion. He will hope that remains the case next Wednesday night, as he takes his Newcastle side to Manchester United.

But before that, Newcastle entertain Brighton at St James’ Park in their final home game of the season.
