Long Melford’s Rug and Carpet Studio set to close after 34 years of trading

A fixture of Long Melford’s high street for more than three decades is set to bid farewell, after a closing-down sale began at the weekend.

The Rug and Carpet Studio, based at the Old White Hart, announced at the start of this month that it will soon cease trading, citing the challenges of the current economic climate.

Offering both traditional and contemporary rugs, as well as specialist restoration and cleaning services, the business has been trading for 34 years.

Addressing customers, owner Sara Tatum explained that the decision to close the business had been a difficult one, but that it was necessary because it was no longer viable to continue trading.

“It is with great regret and sadness that I have made the incredibly difficult decision to close The Rug and Carpet Studio in Long Melford,” she said.

“I assure you this has not been an easy decision. I would be lying if I said we had not been affected by the economic climate. As much as I believe a beautiful handmade rug is an essential item, realistically, I know it is not.

“I also have very many family and personal commitments that I would like to spend more time with.

“After a 34-year journey with this business, which has opened so many exciting doors for me – and I have met so many wonderful people through this business – it is with great regret that I am having to close.

“Beautiful rugs have become deeply ingrained in my soul, and that is never going to leave. Life would be impossible without them.”

In anticipation of the imminent closure, a clearance sale of the store’s current stock commenced on Saturday, and will continue over the coming weeks, with no firm date for the final day of trading as of yet.

Sara added: “Some of the most beautiful rugs here will be treasures for you rather than treasures for me.”

She also confirmed that they will be contacting customers who currently have rugs or carpets with the business for cleaning or conservation, and that they will be kept safe until then.
