Report: £110k-a-week player really wanted to stay at Chelsea, he's now leaving the club

This season has been quite a forgettable one for Chelsea.

Chelsea have spent most of it in 10th place, but they managed to climb into seventh recently, the last European spot.

Their form of late has been much better, with Mauricio Pochettino‘s men managing to win their last two games against London rivals West Ham United and Tottenham Hotspur.

Chelsea’s defence have improved as well, keeping clean sheets in both of those matches.

Thiago Silva helped them to keep their last one, which came in the 5-0 win against David Moyes’ side, but Pochettino will not have the centre-back for much longer.

Chelsea star wanted Stamford Bridge stay

Silva’s £110,000-a-week contract (Spotrac) expires next month and it has now been confirmed that the Brazilian will be joining former club Fluminense.

However, it looks like Silva actually wanted to remain at Stamford Bridge.

A report from LondonWorld has claimed that the central defender wanted a contract extension.

It never came, though, meaning that his four-year stay in west London will come to an end this summer.

Pochettino will still have Levi Colwill, Axel Disasi, Benoit Badiashile, Trevoh Chalobah and Wesley Fofana for the centre-back positions.

Should Chelsea have handed Thiago Silva a new contract?

Yes. Despite being 39 now, Silva is far from past it. In fact, the former Paris Saint-Germain captain is still probably their best defender.

This season, he has made 35 appearances in all competitions and is currently making 4.6 clearances per league game, the highest in Chelsea’s squad (WhoScored).

When it comes to dealing with danger, there is not a better player at Stamford Bridge.

Silva has so much experience as well. You really have to wonder how Chelsea are going to go about trying to replace that.

For whatever reason, they want to head in a different direction, despite it being clear that Silva still has something to offer to this Chelsea team.
