Report: Manchester United ready £43m bid and £165k-a-week deal for one of 'the best' defenders in Europe

Manchester United have a busy summer ahead of them as they look to steady the ship in wake of another difficult season.

The Red Devils are currently eighth in the Premier League table, six points behind fifth-placed Tottenham, and have only won one of their last five in the league.

The expectation is that Manchester United will be busy in the summer transfer market, with big incomings and outgoings predicted.

One area the Red Devils really need to strengthen is in defence, with numerous injuries having cost the team dearly throughout the season.

In addition, Raphael Varane and Jonny Evans will be out of contract in the summer, while Victor Lindelof could go up for sale.

Now, a report from Italy has claimed that Manchester United have readied a bid and bumper contract for “the best defender in Serie A”.

The player in question is Juventus powerhouse Gleison Bremer, who continues to go from strength to strength in Italy.

According to Calciomercato, the Red Devils are ‘ready to make a €50million (£43million) lunge’ for the 27-year-old after having scouted him multiple times.

Manchester United are also said to be willing to offer Bremer €10million a year (around £165,000-a-week), a salary the player ‘would not say no to’.

However, the report claims that €50million may not be enough, given Juve are well aware of how highly sought after the player is.

The Bianconeri apparently want around €70million (£60million), particularly in case they don’t make any other big sales this summer.

Gleison Bremer would be solid signing for Manchester United

Bremer has made a name for himself as one of the best defenders in Europe thanks to his stellar progress in Italy, first with Torino and now with Juve.

In 2022, the Brazilian was the Serie A Defender of the Year, and last term, he made the league’s Team of the Season.

The Juve website has described Bremer as ‘one of the best defenders in circulation’ and an ‘exceptional’ talent.

Last year, scouting outlet Foot The Ball noted how Bremer’s numbers were ‘comparable to Virgil van Dijk and Ruben Dias’.

In addition, Juventus legend Sergio Brio sung Bremer’s praises earlier this year, as per Tuttosport via Il Bianconero.

“Juve’s strong point is definitely the defence,” he said. “They concede few goals and are showing great solidity.

“I really like Bremer. He’s an exceptional player with great timing and positioning on the pitch. The Brazilian is the best defender in Serie A today. I’m certain of it.”

Admittedly, Manchester United will have tough competition for Bremer’s services, and he won’t be cheap, but he certainly looks like he could shore up their shaky defence.
