Report: European club make surprise move to appoint manager sacked by Nottingham Forest in 2019

Nottingham Forest sacked Martin O’Neill in 2019 but now, he’s set to be handed another managerial job.

The European Cup-winning legend at Forest was handed his papers a few days into pre-season training ahead of the 2019/20 campaign.

Forest had failed to reach the play-offs in the 2018/19 campaign when O’Neill was handed the job for the final 19 games of the season.

O’Neill hasn’t worked in football management since leaving the City Ground – but now he’s going to get another job ahead of next season.

Nottingham Forest legend Martin O’Neill set for Rapid Bucharest job

This is a bit of a turn-up for the books but at 72-years-old, O’Neill is set to get back into management.

According to Fanatik, the Forest miracle man is going to get the job with O’Neill having met owner Dan Sucu already.

Marius Sumudica was set to become the permanent replacement for Cristiano Bergodi but now the owner has had a change of heart.

Forest legend O’Neill should be careful, however, with Bucharest going through eight managers in the last four years.

If he’s handed this role, however, he will have a chance to prove that he’s still got what it takes to manage at club level and prove Forest wrong.

Forest had to let legendary figure leave

It’s fair to say that O’Neill didn’t take his Forest sacking very well at all.

He constantly has negative stuff to say about the football club when he’s on television and radio these days and feels hard done by.

His record at Forest was eight wins from 19 games but three of those came when the season was essentially over.

O’Neill has also managed Wycombe, Norwich, Leicester, Celtic, Aston Villa and Sunderland during his career.

He also managed the Republic of Ireland for 55 games and oversaw 19 wins on the international stage.

Forest had to let O’Neill leave – as sad as it proved at the time.

Fans were turning at games and even the games where O’Neill oversaw wins saw the team play a brand of drab football.

Forest have moved on since O’Neill but as a legendary player, the hope will be that he can forget his City Ground debacle and produce the goods in Bucharest.
