N.J. weather: Cooler, rainy weather starts today. Updates on Mother’s Day weekend forecast.

Thunderstorms are possible in most of New Jersey on Thursday, May 9, 2024. The southern most areas of the state are at a marginal or slight risk for severe weather.

A cloudy, cooler day with periods of rain awaits New Jersey on Thursday with unsettled weather likely to continue through Mother’s Day weekend.

Though the threat of severe weather has diminished significantly, some showers are likely to push in sometime between late morning and early afternoon, forecasters say.

Light rain should continue “on and off” for the rest of the day, the National Weather Service said in in its morning forecast discussion.

A day after high temperatures made it well into the 80s, Thursday’s highs are expected to be in the upper 60s to low 70s for most of the state. It will be several degrees cooler along the Jersey Shore. Scattered thunderstorms are possible, but only southernmost areas of the state are at any risk for severe weather.

Rain is expected to become a bit heavier and steadier tonight with overnight lows ranging from the mid-40s in North Jersey to the low 50s in South Jersey.

Highs in New Jersey will reach the 60s on Thursday and only the 50s on Friday. Normal early May highs are in the low 70s.

Coastal flood advisories are in effect for most of New Jersey on Thursday:

  • Gloucester, Camden, northwestern Burlington: from 1 a.m to 6 a.m. Friday
  • Salem: from 11 p.m. Thursday to 3 a.m. Friday
  • Atlantic, Cape May: 8 p.m. Thursday to 2 a.m. Friday. A coastal flood watch will be in effect from 8 p.m Friday evening to 4 a.m. Saturday
  • Middlesex, Monmouth, Ocean, southeastern Burlington: 8 p.m. Thursday to 2 a.m. Friday
  • Hudson: 8 p.m. Thursday to midnight

Friday will be cloudy with periods of lights rain and rather cool for May — highs will only be in the low to mid-50s. Normal highs this time of year are in the low 70s.

Rain chances continue on a brisk Friday night as lows dip into the 40s.

We’ll see improved conditions on Saturday as a mix of sun and clouds are in the forecast. There’s still a slight chance of showers with highs expected to reach the low 60s.

Mother’s Day on Sunday shouldn’t be a washout, but periods of rain are possible on a what is likely to be a cloudy, somewhat cool day. Highs will only be in the upper 50s in many areas of the state, with some places reaching 60 degrees.
