‘I don’t think’: Troy Deeney disagrees with what he’s heard about Andre Onana at Man United this season

Troy Deeney has disagreed with Simon Jordan on Andre Onana’s debut season at Manchester United.

We’ve seen the best and worst of Andre Onana at Manchester United since his summer switch from Inter Milan.

The 28-year-old has hardly walked into an ideal situation at Old Trafford with Erik ten Hag’s side on the decline this season. But it has to be said that Onana has struggled at times, with his shot-stopping leaving plenty to be desired.

The Cameroonian goalkeeper has kept eight clean sheets this term but has conceded 55 goals in 35 Premier League appearances.

Of course, that doesn’t rest entirely at his feet as United have been far from solid defensively this season, with Ten Hag facing ongoing injury concerns across the backline.

Despite a hit-and-miss debut campaign at Old Trafford, Troy Deeney has backed Onana after criticism from Simon Jordan.

Deeney disagrees with Andre Onana criticism

Speaking on Up Front, Graeme Souness claimed it was ‘damning’ to learn the volume of shots United have faced this season.

This prompted Deeney to defend Onana as he said: “Then they say the goalkeeper’s not good enough.”

“He isn’t though, is he? Let’s have it right,” Jordan hit back.

“I don’t think he’s a bad goalie at all,” Deeney responded.

United’s defence hasn’t helped Onana

Just last month, it was revealed that United had faced the highest number of shots in Europe’s top five leagues this year.

Indeed, Opta recorded that Ten Hag’s men had faced 225 shots since the turn of the year.

United’s defensive record hasn’t exactly helped Onana settle in following his switch from Italy but surely more was expected from the goalkeeper.

After a dazzling season at Milan last time out, many expected the shot-stopper to hit the ground running in Manchester.

With that being said, it’s still early days in terms of Onana’s United career and we’ve seen glimpses of his quality this season.
