'Speaking to my agent': Josh Windass says there's a 'big component' behind his Sheffield Wednesday future

Sheffield Wednesday striker Josh Windass has revealed one ‘big component’ that could dictate his future at the club.

Windass is one of many players out of contract at Sheffield Wednesday this summer, four years after joining the club on a permanent basis.

Since then, the 30-year-old striker has scored 40 goals in 135 total appearances for the Owls, scoring the penultimate goals in the last two seasons.

And both goals were crucial ones too with one being the winner in the League One play-off final and the second securing Sheffield Wednesday’s Championship status in their final day win at Sunderland.

Following the win vs Sunderland, Windass posted a cryptic message on social media which looked like it was hinting at a new contract for him in S6.

And now he’s revealed that manager Danny Rohl is a ‘big component’ over whether or not he stays at Hillsborough for the 2024/25 campaign and beyond.

Josh Windass reveals Danny Rohl factor in Sheffield Wednesday contract

Speaking on the Official EFL Podcast with former Owls midfielder David Prutton, Windass was quizzed on his future.

He said: “At this point I don’t really know. I know the club are speaking to my agent now about the next few years. I’m going to go on holiday, and I don’t know what’s happening with Danny yet.”

Prutton then asked Windass if Rohl staying at the club will play a part in whether or not he signs a new contract with Sheffield Wednesday.

Windass said: “I think so, yeah. But obviously I want to be at the club anyway. I’ve had such an affiliation and we’ve had such a good time over the last three of four years.

“But Danny’s a big component, I think for the majority of the lads, to be honest. I think we feel like next year we can go on to even bigger things.”

The latest on Rohl’s Sheffield Wednesday future is that he’s held positive talks with owner Dejphon Chansiri, with said talks also including talks over a potential new contract for Rohl whose current deal expires after the 2024/25 season.

Josh Windass comment proves one thing at Sheffield Wednesday

There’s an obvious air among Sheffield Wednesday fans right now, that the ball is very much in Chansiri’s court where the future of Rohl is concerned.

And the future of Rohl very much feels like the future of Sheffield Wednesday as a whole with his turnaround in the Championship being so unprecedented.

Windass’ comments reaffirm that view and so keeping Rohl happy and content, and at the club for the foreseeable, will have huge, wide spreading benefits for the club as whole.

One of those benefits may see the club keep a lot of their out of contract players in the summer, meaning that they won’t have to do another typical Sheffield Wednesday summer rebuild.

Expect a new deal for Windass to be one of the priorities for the club this summer, after he showed in the final three games of the season just how crucial a player he is for Sheffield Wednesday.
