Didi Hamann says ‘very gifted’ Liverpool midfielder has surprised people since joining the club

Didi Hamann says one ‘very’ gifted Liverpool midfielder has surprised people since he joined the club.

Liverpool brought in four midfielders last summer. Yet most of the headlines towards the end of the summer transfer window was about the one who they could not get.

Liverpool’s failed attempt to land Moises Caicedo from Brighton made headlines, with the Ecuadorean instead opting to sign for Chelsea.

But while that felt like a major blow at the time. In hindsight, Liverpool might be quite content with the decision made by Caicedo.

Didi Hamann on how Dominik Szoboszlai has surprised people

One of the main reasons why Liverpool will not regret not signing Caicedo is because of how good the midfielders who came in have been this season, including Dominik Szoboszlai.

Szoboszlai has been a revelation since he arrived at Anfield, although recently he hasn’t quite done as well as he would have liked. But to be fair, the same can be said of the whole Liverpool team.

Speaking to the Liverpool ECHO, former Liverpool midfielder, Didi Hamann lavished huge praise on Szoboszlai and admitted he always knew the Hungarian would surprise people.

“When he came, you don’t always need the big names, maybe it was a blessing not to get Caicedo for 100-odd million because I knew what a good player he is,” Szoboszlai said.

“He kept a struggling side together. I said all along, I think he will surprise a few people because he’s very disciplined, technically very gifted, two-footed, and an absolute team player.

“I’m not surprised at all. It took a few weeks or a few months to get into the rhythm, maybe to get used to the pace of the Premier League, but no, he hasn’t surprised me at all. He’s a class act.”

What next for Dominik Szoboszlai

It has been a solid first season in Liverpool colours for Dominik Szoboszlai. Now the next stage for him will be to take his game to an even higher level next season under Arne Slot.

But first he will be desperate to lead his country to a successful Euro 2024 campaign. As the captain of Hungary, he is yet to lose a single match in 14 games.

Szoboszlai will be hoping to continue that good run of form before returning to Anfield.
