Jose Mourinho says Tottenham have a player who’s ‘one of the best’ in the world right now

Former Tottenham Hotspur boss Jose Mourinho has lauded a current Spurs star as one of the best in world football right now.

Jose Mourinho didn’t exactly get the best out of his Tottenham players during his spell in north London.

The Portuguese boss was sacked back in April 2021 with Spurs sitting seventh in the league – five points off the top four.

His dismissal came just days before Tottenham’s League Cup final defeat against Manchester City.

It’s fair to say that Mourinho’s departure had been coming after a disappointing campaign which has also seen Spurs exit the Europa League following a 3-0 defeat to Dinamo Zagreb.

But the former Chelsea boss did manage to get the best out of a few players at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium and Heung-min Son falls into that category.

Mourinho says Heung-min Son is ‘one of the best’ in the world

Speaking to EA SPORTS FC, the former Tottenham boss claimed that Son could play for the likes of Liverpool and Manchester City.

“I don’t look at Son as a Korean player,” Mourinho said. “I look at Son as one of the best players in the world. Maybe Tottenham supporters aren’t going to be happy with what I’m going to say, it’s not disrespectful.

“He could win titles, he could play for the best teams. He could be playing in England for Man City, for Liverpool, for Chelsea. It could be abroad playing for one of the top teams.

“He has that modern mobility of the attacking players. He can play through the middle, from the sides, wide to coming inside.”

Son’s record under Mourinho at Tottenham

While many players struggled with Mourinho’s pragmatic style of football, Harry Kane and Son shined under his guidance.

During the 2020-21 campaign before Mourinho’s exit, the duo broke the Premier League record for most goal combinations in a single season – managing to link up 14 times in total.

Son’s record was an excellent one during the Mourinho era, netting 29 goals and providing 25 assists in 70 appearances.
