Jamie Redknapp says one Tottenham player completely changed the game at Liverpool today

Jamie Redknapp was left impressed with one Tottenham Hotspur player despite today’s 4-2 defeat against Liverpool.

Spurs fans would have been hoping for a response at Anfield following consecutive London derby defeats.

That certainly wasn’t the case for the opening 60 minutes of the game, with Liverpool netting four times after a lacklustre display from Ange Postecoglou’s side.

Tottenham picked up where they left off at Stamford Bridge and Postecoglou finally decided he’d seen enough after Harvey Elliott bagged Liverpool’s fourth.

Richarlison, Oliver Skipp and James Maddison were introduced from the bench and Spurs instantly improved.

Richarlison netted in the 72nd minute following a bright move from Spurs down the right-hand side.

Heung-min Son grabbed another back just five minutes later and despite a late flurry of chances, it proved to be too big of a mountain to climb for the Lilywhites.

Despite a fourth consecutive defeat for Postecoglou, there will be some positives to take from the latter stages of the game.

Redknapp praises Richarlison after Liverpool vs Tottenham

Richarlison has recently returned from a spell on the sidelines after picking up a knee injury back in February.

There have been claims that the Brazilian could head out the door this summer but he was a real bright spark for Tottenham off the bench today.

The 26-year-old netted with a well-taken goal and caused real problems for the Liverpool backline with his movement off the ball.

His cameo led to praise from Jamie Redknapp, who feels the former Everton man changed the game at Anfield.

“Richarlison changed the whole complex of the game when he came on,” Redknapp told Sky Sports. “Gave them a bit of energy, a bit of bite. But Liverpool were different class.”

Richarlison’s stats vs Liverpool

Despite only playing 29 minutes, Richarlison picked up an 8.1 match rating from Sofascore – the highest of any Spurs player on the day.

  • 1 goal
  • 1 assist
  • 2 shots on target
  • 20 touches
  • 9/12 accurate passes
  • 1 big chance created

Richarlison has certainly given Postecoglou plenty to think about ahead of a home game against Burnley on Saturday.

The forward dropped to the bench following a quiet game at Stamford Bridge on his return to the starting XI. But Son has hardly been convincing in the No9 role of late and on the back of today’s display, he deserves a chance from the off next weekend.
