Inter Miami defender Nicolas Freire has detailed his awe of one thing Sergio Busquets has done on the pitch this season.
The 35-year-old midfielder has been an unsung hero for the Herons since joining the club last year alongside Lionel Messi and Jordi Alba, with Busquets making 16 appearances in all competitions already for Inter Miami in 2024.
With the Florida franchise sat top of the MLS Supporters’ Shield standings, Busquets’ qualities and presence in midfield are apparent, with the former Spanish international settling nicely at Inter Miami this year.
And teammate Freire has been impressed with one thing he’s already seen from Busquets.
Freire amazed by Busquets’ tactical awareness for Inter Miami
Speaking to the press after yesterday’s training session, Freire revealed he is in awe of Busquets tactical awareness when playing for Inter Miami, a trait that has helped the midfielder become one of the best operators on the planet.
Freire said about Busquets’ tactical awareness: “There are different ways of creating an exit, provoking the rival to come forward and being able to find that pass to break their first line of pressure.
“These are situations that arise in the game, obviously, Sergio has the tactical brilliance and when he sees the possibility of getting involved he does it and we find a way out.
“It is a big plus to have players of this quality, like Sergio, who have that tactical map in their head that tells them where, at that moment, where they need to go and what they want you to do.”
MLS teams can’t compete with Busquets’ soccer brain
Busquets has been one of the best midfielders in soccer for the best part of 15 years, and MLS have simply not seen a player as intelligent as the veteran maestro in the league’s existence.
The former FC Barcelona superstar has become a force nobody in the division has encountered and is yet to figure out how to stop, with Busquets enjoying his role in the center of midfield and dictating play.
Indeed, Busquets has taken Inter Miami to a new level alongside Messi, and the midfielder is now in a league where the pace suits his game at this stage in his career, where the 35-year-old is thriving.
