Sheffield Wednesday midfielder has 'interest in England and overseas' with summer exit confirmed - journalist

Sheffield Wednesday are starting to make decisions on their out of contract players, with another player set to join Lee Gregory in leaving S6 this summer.

Gregory recently penned his farewell message to Sheffield Wednesday fans, following three years at the club and 29 league goals.

The 35-year-old helped fire the Owls to promotion from League One but hasn’t been favoured by Danny Rohl since his arrival at Hillsborough in October.

There’s other players out of contract and there’s a lot of uncertainty, it seems, about who stays and who goes.

Reports have suggested that Barry Bannan and Josh Windass are in line few new contracts this summer, though Windass recently suggested that a lot of the players are waiting to see what happens with Rohl this summer.

Rohl is also in contract discussions with Sheffield Wednesday owner Dejphon Chansiri and if he commits his long-term future to the club, so may a lot of the players, too.

But journalist Joe Crann has now confirmed another player exit for the Owls this summer.

George Byers set to leave Sheffield Wednesday

Crann has now revealed on X that well-liked Sheffield Wednesday midfielder George Byers will be leaving the club as a free agent this summer.

It’s an unfortunate ending to his time in South Yorkshire; he scored six and assisted three more in Sheffield Wednesday’s promotion-winning 2022/23 season, becoming a fan favourite for his technical and energetic performances.

And he was playing regularly under Rohl, though Sheffield Wednesday then made the confusing decision to send him out on loan to Blackpool during the January transfer window.

Byers has since done well with the Seasiders, featuring 16 times in League One and grabbing one assist, but earning praise for several of his performances.

Crann says ‘there’s a queue forming’ for Byers ahead of the summer, with ‘interest in England and overseas’, as well as interest from some of Sheffield Wednesday’s rivals.

Should Sheffield Wednesday release George Byers

Sheffield Wednesday have to be more ruthless if they’re going to build for the long-term. But still, releasing Byers who is a proven and useful Championship player seems like a rash decision.

He’s shown in the past for Swansea City that he can compete at this level, and with midfield options light as it is, releasing Byers will leave Sheffield Wednesday in need of a number of new midfielders.

With Byers, it simply seems like he doesn’t suit the style of play under Rohl. He was often the first player to be brought off in games and maybe the high-tempo style just didn’t suit him, or at least not in Rohl’s eyes anyway.

Still, letting Byers go opens up a space in the squad and some room in the wage bill for Rohl to bring someone in who he thinks will better compliment his playing style, and so it’s not all bad for Sheffield Wednesday.

Nor for Byers who looks like he won’t be without a club for very long, and rightly so; he’s a very good player and at 27 years old, he’s still got a lot of eyars left ahead of him.
