'I will never forget': Ike Ugbo pens emotional message to Sheffield Wednesday fans after loan spell

Ike Ugbo has penned an emotional message to Sheffield Wednesday after his loan spell came to an end.

Ike Ugbo had had five rather unsuccessful spells in England before he arrived at Sheffield Wednesday.

The striker began his career with Chelsea where he failed to make an appearance, before he was sent out on loan to Barnsley, MK Dons and Scunthorpe United – where he netted five goals in 51 games.

Ugbo also had a brief loan spell with Cardiff City in the first half of the 2023/24 campaign and scored four times before he returned to Troyes prematurely.

The Canada international then linked up with Sheffield Wednesday at the start of the year and hasn’t looked back, claiming eight goal contributions in 18 matches and making a huge contribution to their survival in the Championship.

Ike Ugbo ‘will never forget’ his loan spell

Ugbo has now taken to Instagram to address the club and the fans as he prepares to return to France.

He wrote: “To all SWFC fans, staff and teammates. Thank you for all the experience you have given me this season.

“When I first joined the club in January, I knew the upward battle we had to face, but from day one I felt the togetherness from the whole club was going to pull us through.

“From the belief from the manager, to the constant support from the fans, we managed to get the job done.

“Even though it’s only been a few months, the journey we’ve been on together has been one I will never forget.

“Thank you, Owls.”

Could Sheffield Wednesday sign him permanently?

While there has been talk of Sheffield Wednesday pushing to sign Ike Ugbo permanently, the forward’s message sounds like one of accepting his chapter here is closed.

Though that isn’t necessarily the case if the Owls were to launch a bid for him, and he is hardly going to be publishing all over social media how badly he wants to stay at Hillsborough.

Ugbo still has two years left on his contract at Troyes, and the French club could look to take advantage of his impressive campaign in the Championship.

His value could decrease when he enters the final 12 months of his deal next summer, so it seems more likely that they would offload him for a decent fee over the next few months.

According totransfermarkt, Ugbo’s market value is currently £2.4 million, though that seems likely to increase if he receives plenty of interest.

It would be a big statement if Wednesday were willing to cough up, but that decision will be down to whether Dejphon Chansiri can back Danny Rohl like he is expected to.
