Sheffield Wednesday defender has 'big interest' in Championship, Owls 'in talks' over new deal - journalist

One Sheffield Wednesday defender has ‘big interest’ from clubs in the Championship and also from Europe ahead of his contract expiry.

Sheffield Wednesday have a number of players out of contract this summer, with the club already making decisions on who stays and who goes.

Lee Gregory has already said his farewell to the Owls faithful whilst reports have confirmed that George Byers will be leaving as a free agent.

One player who the club are known to be in talks with is Josh Windass; the striker appears keen on staying but suggested that he wants the future of Danny Rohl tied up before he commits his own future.

Rohl has recently held positive talks with Sheffield Wednesday owner Dejphon Chansiri about the summer ahead, with talks over a new contract for the German as well.

So Wednesday are certainly making strides into the summer, but they will surely be fearful of losing Di’Shon Bernard.

Di’Shon Bernard attracting transfer interest at Sheffield Wednesday

Bernard joined Sheffield Wednesday on a free transfer last summer, signing a one-year deal after leaving Manchester United.

And he’s since prevailed. Jamaican international Bernard has shown for both club and country this season, featuring 32 times in the Championship and proving to be a very important player for Rohl.

Rohl was reported to be keen on a new deal for Bernard earlier this season. But he’s out of contract next month and journalist Alex Miller has revealed emerging interest in the 23-year-old.

Miller says Bernard is ‘of big interest to clubs in the Championship and Europe’, adding that Sheffield Wednesday are in talks over a new contract but face an uphill battle to get him to stay.

One key factor in Di’Shon Bernard staying at Sheffield Wednesday

At 23, Bernard hasn’t gained all that much experience. But he’s shown with Sheffield Wednesday that he’s still a top player and his time in S6 may prove pivotal in shaping his future.

And depending on what clubs come in for him this summer, it seems like there’s a definite chance he stays, though like Windass, he may want to see if Rohl stays first before committing his own future.

Rohl staying for at least another season would allow Bernard to continue playing in this front-foot and exciting team which seems to be bring the best out of him.

He’s proved formidable at the back, both in the air and on the ground, and he’s still young, so it’s no surprise to see this amount of interest in him.

Ideally for Sheffield Wednesday, they get him on a two-year deal and then sell him at some point.

But that seems like a long-shot as things stand; Rohl will surely want to keep Bernard if he himself stays in Sheffield, which is starting to look increasingly likely.

A new deal for Bernard could be the Owls’ best signing of the summer.
