Superwoman author Shirley Conran has died at 91

Famous designer Jasper Conran, Shirley’s son, announced the death of his mother at the age of 91 on Thursday, May 9th 2024.

“Shirl girl has flown away, a lark ascending,” he wrote in mourning on Instagram. “Thank you to all the wonderful doctors and nurses and thank you to all of you kind, dear people who sent her so many beautiful messages that meant so much to her.”

The celebrity arguably remains best known for the 1975 non-fiction book Superwoman, a guide to household management that has been praised for decades as an informative and key feminist text.

On the other hand, she received a damehood while in her hospital bed, days before her tragic passing in honor of founding the Maths Anxiety Trust. She founded Maths Action in 2009 and later went on to publish the maths course Money Stuff. It was in 2018 that she founded the wonderful Maths Anxiety Trust with the hope of raising awareness of and helping with maths anxiety.

Going much further back and chronicling her earlier career, Shirley transitioned out of textile design and into journalism, adopting numerous roles and hitting milestones before reaching a position as a columnist at Vanity Fair.

She published her first novel, Lace, in 1982, later penning such others as Tiger Eyes, Savages, and Crimson.

Tributes recognize her ‘era-defining novels’

Leaving behind a legacy in print, fearless campaigning, and educational aid, tributes continue to be paid to Shirley in the wake of the unfortunate announcement.

“RIP Shirley Conran, author of era-defining novels such as Lace,” one recently wrote on X/Twitter. “Among her achievements was Money Stuff, a free 6-part online course, originally for younger women, connecting how you manage your money with real life and real ambitions.”

“Thinking about the ways in which Shirley Conran was ahead of her time…” another tweeted in respect.

“A life well lived,” a fan touchingly added. “Lace is a favorite in my household, especially during the Holidays. Thank you for Lucinda Lace and many beautiful moments.”

May she rest in peace and her achievements never fade.
