Paul Merson suggests he can't see Newcastle paying big money to sign 'talented' striker this summer

Newcastle United could be in the market for a striker this summer, but Paul Merson does not believe that one of the Magpies’ targets will be on the move.

It could be a summer of change at St James’ Park, with first-team regulars being linked with moves away. That includes Callum Wilson, whose future remains uncertain – despite Eddie Howe making it very clear that he wants to keep the 32-year-old.

That is because of how good he is in front of goal, and how much it would cost to replace him. But Newcastle will need to find a replacement eventually, and may decide that this summer is the right time to bite the bullet.

Newcastle linked with Bournemouth star

If that is the case then Newcastle could turn to a player who they looked at in the January transfer window.

Dominic Solanke was a rumoured target for the Magpies, with Toon officials making an enquiry for the Bournemouth striker. However, it was turned down, with the Cherries adamant that their top scorer was going nowhere.

That proved to be the case, with Solanke remaining at the Vitality Stadium and continuing his impressive season. The 26-year-old has scored 18 Premier League goals, which is only two less than Newcastle’s top scorer Alexander Isak.

Solanke would be quite the signing for Newcastle, and Geordie Boot Boys were told earlier this year that the club could reignite their interest in the England international. That appears to be the case, with Give Me Sport reporting that Newcastle have contacted Bournemouth about a deal.

What Paul Merson has said about Dominic Solanke

But while Solanke is a man in demand after enjoying the best Premier League season of his career, pundit Paul Merson does not expect anyone to offer mega money for the former Chelsea and Liverpool man.

Merson has spoke to Sportskeeda about Solanke, and explained why he thinks Bournemouth will keep their number nine.

“As for Solanke, I think teams will want to see him replicate his form next season before paying the big bucks for him,” he said.

“I do like him though – he’s a talented striker who has well and truly enjoyed a breakthrough campaign.”

Merson makes an excellent point about Solanke

Merson, who has predicted Newcastle United to beat Brighton on Saturday, makes an interesting point about Solanke’s future.

While he has enjoyed a special season, it is actually only the first time he has hit double figures in the Premier League. Before this year, his best tally was six.

That is perhaps why teams like Newcastle should think again before splashing out on Solanke. It is probably the worst time to buy him, as his value will be through the roof, while there are no guarantees he will replicate this season’s success.

That is why Merson does not think a club like Newcastle will make a move, and he is probably right.
