3rd man charged in New Year’s Day fatal shooting in Elizabeth

A third person is now facing murder charges more than a year after an 18-year-old Bronx, New York man was shot and killed in Elizabeth.

Yoel Sanchez, 22, of Elizabeth, was taken into custody Tuesday in the city and charged with murder and weapons offenses, the Union County Prosecutor’s Office said Friday.

Sanchez and two associates shot Vladimir Martinez multiple times on Jan. 1, 2023 in the area of 4th Street, officials said. A motive for the shooting wasn’t disclosed.

Jofrandy Diaz-Ramirez and Albenys Soto-Fernandez, both 25 and from Elizabeth, were arrested on Feb. 28, 2023. They face the same charges as Sanchez. All three remain held in county jails outside of Union County.

Attorney information for the three wasn’t immediately available.

Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to call Union County Prosecutor’s Office Detective Kevin Stanicki at 908-527-4695 or Elizabeth police Detective Edward Pinkevicz at 908-558-2035.
