'It will knock us back': Eddie Howe has warned Newcastle against making a big mistake this summer

Newcastle United’s best players continue to be linked with a move away from the club this summer.

Now, it would be foolish to doubt PIF’s ambition in charge of Newcastle. They have spent big money and the likes of Amanda Staveley have openly talked about the desire to win major trophies.

Still, the financial reality the club are operating in means it’s not going to be a case of world domination any time soon.

Indeed, Newcastle are still working under FFP limitations, meaning they cannot simply go out and spend huge amounts of cash.

As such, key players have been linked with moves away.

Bruno Guimaraes and Alexander Isak are being tipped for exits, though it’s clearly not a guarantee that either will go.

Guimaraes does have a release clause in his contract that is thought to complicate matters, albeit the likes of Craig Hope are seemingly confident he will stay.

Isak, meanwhile, is thought to be the player Eddie Howe wants to build around for years to come.

Such is their importance, Howe has suggested to owners PIF that allowing either to go would be a major mistake.

Eddie Howe warns against selling Bruno Guimaraes or Alexander Isak this summer

Speaking ahead of Saturday’s Premier League meeting with Brighton, Howe said (via the Daily Mail): “We’re looking to build a squad and a really successful team and, to do that, we don’t want to sell our best players.

“That is hugely important for us, it will knock us back some considerable distance because we would have to start again.”

Bruno Guimaraes and Alexander Isak both want to stay at Newcastle

Clearly, either player being presented with a mega offer from a team playing Champions League football may change matters.

Still, Guimaraes has talked about just how much he wants to stay on Tyneside for years to come. Isak has made similar comments, too.

How much you read into that is obviously a personal choice but, on the face of it, it seems both players are keen to continue their Newcastle careers.

Guimaraes having a release clause does make life harder when it comes to the battle to keep him but Newcastle would be foolish to even consider bids below that, amid suggestions there’s a verbal agreement allowing him to depart for around £80m.

It would be foolish to let either go and Howe is right to point it out.
