Report: Where Jairo Riedewald could now end up after Crystal Palace announce exit

Jairo Riedewald will leave Crystal Palace when his contract expires in July – as announced by the Eagles on Friday.

The Dutchman – and also James Tomkins – will depart Selhurst Park at the end of the 2023/24 campaign after Oliver Glasner decided against extending their respective deals.

Joel Ward, Jeffrey Schlupp and Will Hughes also found themselves at risk of free agency this summer, but all three have signed 12-month extensions.

Now, a report from the Netherlands has shared where Jairo Riedewald could go after leaving Crystal Palace

Jairo Riedewald could return to the Netherlands

A story from Dutch news outlet Twente Insite now claims that the Crystal Palace No.44 could sign for FC Twente when he officially leaves Selhurst Park this summer.

It is said that Riedewald may be snapped up by the Eredivisie outfit as a replacement for Gijs Smal – who himself is leaving on a free transfer at the end of the season.

The 27-year-old has only made two Premier League starts at Crystal Palace this season, and only eight Premier League appearances in total as he once again struggles to assert himself on the starting XI.

It is a situation that has always puzzled the Selhurst Park faithful somewhat, as Riedewald has rarely let the Eagles down – if ever – since arriving in a £8m deal from Ajax back in July 2017.

We genuinely cannot recall the man from Haarlem delivering a bad performance at any point when called upon across the past seven years, although he barely got a sniff of action under Roy Hodgson, and also Patrick Vieira.

Crystal Palace will miss the Dutchman

Steve Parish and Glasner clearly believe we can cope without Riedewald on the pitch.

While that is a fair assessment, given the depth in the centre-back and central midfield departments, Crystal Palace will certainly miss the Dutchman’s impact behind the scenes.

On several occasions, academy players have singled Riedewald out as someone who put an arm around their shoulder and helped them, while the versatile midfielder himself has also been vocal in his praise of these talents, calling Jesurun Rak-Sakyi an “exciting” talent back in July, for example.

A story from The Athletic adds that he is one of the most popular players at Copers Cope, and has always impressed staff with his attitude in training – despite a lack of game time.

With all of the above in mind, Riedewald will certainly be missed by Crystal Palace fans, and we wish him well in his future endeavours.
