Report: What Crystal Palace insiders are now saying about Adam Wharton after 4-0 win

Michael Olise stole the show with two goals in a 4-0 win for Crystal Palace against Manchester United on Monday night, although Adam Wharton also made the headlines.

In what was just his 14th Premier League appearance since a £22m move from Blackburn Rovers in January, the 20-year-old absolutely shone in midfield against the likes of Kobbie Mainoo.

Pundits and fans alike have since raved about Adam Wharton – although the thoughts of those inside Crystal Palace have now emerged too…

What Crystal Palace insiders are saying about Adam Wharton

Unsurprisingly, Steve Parish and Dougie Freedman believe they have struck gold.

A story from the BBC claims that insiders at Selhurst Park think Wharton could well turn out to be the club’s best signing from the Championship – which speaks volumes when you consider the fact Ebere Eze and Olise were also plucked from England’s second tier.

It is a bold belief, but an understandable one.

Olise needed a bit of time to impose himself under Patrick Vieira – albeit partly due to arriving with an injury – while Eze scored just once and provided two assists in his first 14 Premier League appearances under Roy Hodgson.

However, Wharton looks like he has been playing Premier League football for over a decade – slotting in seamlessly and visibly improving on a weekly basis.

The Crystal Palace No.20 even looks more muscular compared to when he arrived in January – it is scary to think about what he could become next season after a full summer of work with Oliver Glasner.

Wharton is also showing signs of leadership, after one eye-catching interaction with Jean-Philippe Mateta.

Gareth Southgate was surely impressed

Interestingly, Gareth Southgate was in attendance at Selhurst Park on Monday night.

The England boss was surely struck by Wharton’s quality up against Mainoo, although nobody seems to be speaking about Tyrick Mitchell.

Crystal Palace’s No.3 has been superb under Glasner in a wing-back role, providing the assist for Eze’s winner at Anfield and now scoring against Manchester United.

With Luke Shaw and Ben Chilwell both currently injured, we see no reason why Mitchell cannot sneak into the England squad for UEFA EURO 2024 this summer.
