‘Unbelievable’: Mateo Kovacic says he has been amazed by one Man City player this season

Mateo Kovacic has said that he has been blown away by what he’s seen from one Manchester City player this season.

The midfielder is nearing the end of his debut season with the Citizens since joining from Chelsea during the previous summer transfer window.

Having started four of City’s five previous Premier League games and completed the full 90 minutes in three of them, the 30-year-old has been a key figure for Pep Guardiola in what has been a crucial past few weeks of the campaign.

After playing through the majority of today’s 4-0 win at Fulham, Kovacic took the time to share some praise for another fairly new figure in the City squad and what he’s been doing this season.

Speaking to the media (via Man City) after the win in West London, Kovacic has this to say when asked about Josko Gvardiol’s performances this season and his recent run of goalscoring form.

He said: “He is playing unbelievable.

“I knew him already for a long time now and his quality is unbelievable. He can play up front or at the back, [he’s] an unbelievable player and guy.

“I’m very happy for him to score these goals.”

Josko Gvardiol has been in top form recently

Gvardiol followed his fellow countryman to the Etihad Stadium last summer, arriving from RB Leipzig in a deal worth £77m.

Since then, the defender has gone on to make 39 appearances for the Blues across all competitions, 26 of which have been in the Premier League.

In fact, as Kovacic mentioned, the 22-year-old has scored four goals in his past five league games, two of which came in the recent win at Fulham.

Looking across his entire league campaign, the defender has earned himself an overall season rating of 7.01/10 from WhoScored based on his performances, making him the highest-rated defender in the City squad.

With all of that in mind, it’s easy to see why Kovacic has been so impressed with what his club and country teammate has done in his first season at City, which could end with the two summer recruits winning their first Premier League and FA Cup titles with the Citizens.
