Ange Postecoglou names the Tottenham Hotspur substitute who was ‘really good’ against Burnley

Tottenham Hotspur got back to winning ways against Burnley, coming from behind to beat the Clarets 2-1 on Saturday afternoon.

Ange Postecoglou desperately needed a victory as Vincent Kompany’s side arrived in North London.

Four defeats in a row had left the Australian under more pressure than at any other point in his Tottenham days.

Fans may have felt a rather familiar sinking feeling in the first half as Jacob Bruun Larsen fired Burnley in front.

Tottenham supporters have become used to seeing this exact script at home; fall behind, find a leveller and win it late on.

It was the same again as Pedro Porro levelled it up for Tottenham before Micky van de Ven won it.

The Dutchman broke into the box before slotting a left-footed effort into the corner of the net, completing Tottenham’s turnaround.

Postecoglou’s attackers still seem a little off-colour right now, so two goals from defenders was certainly appreciated.

Ange Postecolgou on Rodrigo Bentancur

Postecoglou used his bench to its maximum in the second half.

Rodrigo Bentancur, Dane Scarlett and Radu Dragusin all came on with 15 minutes to play.

Giovani Lo Celso and Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg were then brought on the final stages, helping Tottenham see out the victory.

Bentancur completed 15 passes and made one interception after his introduction into the Tottenham midfield.

That may not have been an eye-catching display just on the stats, but he certainly helped Spurs get over the line for a crucial win.

Postecoglou has now praised Bentancur whilst speaking to Football London after the final whistle against Burnley.

Postecoglou feels that Bentancur was ‘really good’ when he came on, making an impression alongside fellow substitutes Scarlett and Dragusin.

“Dane came on and worked really hard. I thought Rodri was really good when he came on as well. Radu did well so the subs made an impact,” said Postecoglou.

Bentancur may now hope to start against Manchester City in midweek as he looks to get back to his best.

Patience required with Bentancur

The Uruguayan is a quality midfielder when fit and firing but he has struggled to find those levels in recent times.

Bentancur has been in and out of the team and hasn’t scored since the 2-2 draw at Manchester United in January.

It’s easy to forget that Bentancur is still working his way back into fitness after a lengthy lay-off with a torn ACL.

That injury kept Bentancur out for eight months and he was then hit with a month-long absence just weeks after his return.

Coming back from that huge injury and then suffering another setback is difficult both physically and mentally.

The 26-year-old has been injury-free in 2024 but he still needs to find his sharpness and and consistency once again.

Bentancur has shown his quality on numerous occasions and a full pre-season this summer should hopefully get him back towards his best again; Tottenham fans just need to have a little patience with Bentancur after such a long absence.
