Tottenham Hotspur back in the race to sign French winger after trying to sign him last summer

Tottenham Hotspur could look towards Sassuolo’s Armand Lauriente after the decision over Timo Werner’s future became a little trickier.

Werner arrived from RB Leipzig in January and it’s fair to say that there were more than a few eyebrows raised in the Tottenham fanbase.

The German hadn’t exactly impressed in the Premier League with Chelsea and had dropped down the pecking order upon returning to RB Leipzig.

Tottenham struck a deal to take Werner on loan until the summer with the option of a £15million permanent move included.

Werner has mostly played as a left-sided winger under Ange Postecoglou and showed some quality in terms of driving at defenders and getting the byline.

The end product has still been a little scruffy but Tottenham’s decision over whether to pull the trigger on that permanent move has become difficult.

Werner is now out injured and will miss the final stages of the season, meaning that we may have already seen his final game in a Tottenham shirt.

Spurs will make the decision soon enough but other targets will surely be in mind as Postecoglou heads towards his third transfer window as Tottenham boss.

Tottenham want Armand Lauriente

A similar profile may be in mind in terms of an attacker who can play out wide or up front, offering versatility across Postecoglou’s forward line.

Sassuolo’s Armand Lauriente may fit the bill and Tottenham are allegedly interested.

TuttoJuve reporter Mirko Di Natale now claims that Tottenham have joined West Ham United in scouting Lauriente on multiple occasions.

Juventus are also interested whilst a mystery club from Ligue 1 are also keen tabs on the Sassuolo forward.

The 25-year-old has predominantly played as a left winger this season but was previously used as a striker with former club Lorient.

Lauriente’s numbers from the 2023-24 season don’t look all that impressive – five goals and five assists in 34 Serie A appearances.

Tottenham may well see some untapped potential in Lauriente and he appears to have been on the Spurs radar for a while now.

Agent Roberto Meloni told Tuttomercatoweb in September 2023 that Tottenham were keen on signing Lauriente last summer.

That interest doesn’t appear to have vanished and Tottenham could reignite the interest in Lauriente during this summer’s transfer window.

Who is Sassuolo ace Lauriente?

Lauriente emerged as a teenager with Red Star in Paris before heading to Rennes at the age of just 15.

First-team chances were hard to come by though and after a loan spell with Loriente, Lauriente completed a permanent switch.

That is where Lauriente started to really shine and six goals in the 2021-22 campaign sparked interest.

Sassuolo won the race and Lauriente responded brilliantly, hitting seven goals in his first Serie A campaign.

Lauriente hasn’t been able to build on that superb start this season but continues to cause problems for defenders when cutting in from the left flank.

The Frenchman – who has one Under-21 cap to his name – may not set pulses racing at Tottenham after a mixed season season in Italy and we would be surprised to see him join ahead of Werner this summer.
