'We all know why' West Ham star's wife hits out at Bowen award and he reposts it

A West Ham star’s wife has hit out at Jarrod Bowen winning the Hammer of the Year award and he has reposted it.

It was a day of thanks, appreciation and showing respect at West Ham on Saturday.

West Ham fans said goodbye to David Moyes, Angelo Ogbonna and possibly one or two others.

A shadow was cast over the annual lap of honour that was set to follow West Ham’s last home game of the season against Luton when the visitors took an early lead which they held at half-time.

Jeers rang out around the London Stadium following yet another poor effort.

They turned to cheers by full-time, though. West Ham came from behind to win 3-1 and more than 50,000 fans stayed to give and receive gratitude as players, staff and their families as they took part in the lap of honour.

The post game festivities also included the club’s awards.

Bowen beats Areola to Hammer of the Year

As reported last week, West Ham scrapped plans for a slap-up awards dinner – usually held at a posh hotel to raise money for the Academy.

They were handed out on the pitch instead, including the prestigious Hammer of the Year award.

The honour has been won by some of the greats of the game.

Names such as Bobby Moore, Sir Geoff Hurst, Sir Trevor Brooking, Billy Bonds, Carlos Tevez, Paolo Di Canio and last season’s winner Declan Rice, grace the list.

West Ham’s top scorer Jarrod Bowen added his name to it with what would likely have been a landslide win.

Bowen has scored 20 goals and laid on 10 assists during a fantastic campaign where he has played in different positions at times.

But it is what he does for the team in terms of work ethic which makes him special too. Bowen very much makes the Hammers tick.

The award did not go down well with one player and his partner, though, it seems.

Areola’s wife hits out at Bowen award

Goalkeeper Alphonse Areola was right up there in the shout for Hammer of the Year too.

But the West Ham star’s wife has hit out at Bowen winning the award on social media and he has reposted it.

In a rather pathetic, myopic and unnecessary dig, Marrion Areola took to Instagram to vent that her husband – who has indeed been brilliant all season – did not win the honour.

“Save of the season, ok. But it should have been player of the year and we all know why,” she said alongside an awkward face emoji.

Quite what she is getting at, only she knows.

But Areola clearly agreed with his wife.

Because he decided to repost her post on his own Instagram.

It’s just not cricket

Perhaps she feels goalkeepers are underappreciated or undervalued?

If so she clearly has a short memory. Because Areola won Fulham’s player of the season award in the campaign before he joined West Ham.

On a day that should have been about the West Ham family coming together, this was totally out of order.

Everyone is entitled to their opinion and of course Areola will have won many of the votes.

But to put that out on social media, where Areola’s teammate Bowen and others will see it – and for the ‘keeper to then give it his own backing by reposting it – just doesn’t sit right.

You don’t behave like that towards your teammates even if you don’t agree.

Very poor form.
