'Terrible': Alan Shearer says he can't 'protect' £21m Newcastle star for what he did yesterday

Newcastle United could just not find a way through Brighton towards the end of Saturday’s draw in the Premier League.

Though picking up a point against the Seagulls is hardly a disaster, Newcastle could not take a huge step towards securing Europa League qualification by finding a winner.

Clearly, that is hugely frustrating and it was disappointing that many of the players potentially playing their final home game as a Newcastle player could not sign off with a victory.

As Sean Longstaff said, Eddie Howe’s side huffed and puffed throughout the contest but rarely did they look genuinely dangerous enough to add to the midfielder’s goal.

Anthony Gordon had a goal rightly ruled out in the closing stages, while penalty appeals were waved away.

One of those came as a result of Miguel Almiron diving and it’s fair to say Alan Shearer was not impressed.

Alan Shearer slams Miguel Almiron for diving against Brighton as Newcastle draw

The £21m forward flung himself to the ground under the challenge of Jakub Moder during added time and was duly booked for his simulation.

Speaking on BBC Match of the Day, Shearer slammed Almiron and Brighton’s Julio Enciso for their play-acting.

“I’m not going to protect him,” he said.

“It’s shocking from both players. Terrible from both of them.”

Newcastle might upgrade on Miguel Almiron this summer

Almiron may well have played his final home game as a Newcastle player.

There is an expectation the Paraguay international will leave the club this summer, with a move to Saudi Arabia potentially being lined up.

While there have been good moments from the 30-year-old and his performance against Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League will live long in the memory, Almiron has continued to frustrate at times.

Speaking on a video posted on YouTube, journalist Craig Hope said: “I think they’ll go out and spend good money on a player who gives more in terms of that end product on a regular, reliable basis.”

Indeed, it’s disappointing that his final act at home as a Newcastle player may well have been a ridiculous dive.

Not a nice way to go out…
