Police vehicles crash while chasing SUV in Essex County

At least two Bloomfield police cruisers crashed early Monday while reportedly chasing a driver into Newark.

Bloomfield police were chasing a black SUV about 2 a.m. when they crashed near Grove Street and South Orange Avenue in nearby Newark, ABC7ny.com reported. The SUV driver fled, according to the report.

Video from the scene show damaged Bloomfield police vehicles and a potted plant that had been knocked over on a sidewalk spewing soil in front of businesses during the crash.

The injured officers were taken to a local hospital for injuries that were not considered life-threatening.

Newark police declined to comment on the crash. A spokesman for the Bloomfield Police Department did not immediately return a call and email seeking comment.

“Early this morning, officers from Bloomfield Police Department were involved in a high speed pursuit of a suspect into Newark, which ended in multiple injuries, fortunately none of which were life threatening,” Bloomfield Councilwoman Jenny Mundell said in a Facebook post.
