Speed reduction scheme in Chatteris gathers support after a shaky launch

A scheme to reduce speeding has now kicked off after an unsuccessful launch.

By his own admission, British Democrat Councillor Ken Perrin saw the scheme to reduce speed in Station Street and Station Road get off to a less than productive start.

Ken said: “First of all the appeals for volunteers failed to get the numbers required for a speed watch group, then the speed watch coordinator from Cambs Police retired - with no immediate replacement announced.”

Undeterred, Ken spoke to a couple of locals, and now, with their input, the speed reduction scheme, in its early proposal stage, has gathered real support.

Ken engaged with the local school and a nursery in the area.

He said both the head of the school and the owner of the nursery in Station Road had expressed concerns over the safety of the children due to speeding.

Ken said the owner of the nursery told him that every time parents and children arrive and leave, she has to keep an “eagle eye” open for reckless drivers - even having her own car hit by one.

All parties agreed that a 20MPH school proximity scheme would alleviate their fears and would greatly add to the security and safety of over 400 children that the establishments cater to.

Ken’s next job is to canvas the residents who raised the issue during his election campaign.

Ken added: “I need to get a consensus from all involved in the area - not just plough ahead without consulting them.

“I said when elected, I would serve the community with honesty, integrity, and openness.”

He will now put together a petition and engage with the authorities in an effort to get the scheme approved and implemented.

“Although this is hard, time-consuming work, it is worth it as I am their mouthpiece, not their dictator”, Ken said.
