Dan Putty elected Basingstoke and Deane mayor for 2024/25

Basingstoke and Deane has chosen its new mayor for the coming year.

Dan Putty was made mayor at a ceremony at the Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council’s Civic Offices on the evening on Thursday, May 9.

Mr Putty previously served as mayor in 2013 to 2014, and has served as a borough councillor for the Hatch Warren and Beggarwood ward since 1995.

Mr Putty said: “I am honoured to be elected as the Mayor of Basingstoke and Deane for a second term.

“I aim to use my mayoral year to promote community cohesion, working together so the borough is a happy and united place to live and work.”

Mr Putty was born in Mauritius and stayed on the island with his family throughout his primary, secondary and tertiary education.

After gaining some experience in financial management and leaving school, he decided to travel to England to study nursing.

He arrived in the United Kingdom in 1970 and studied nursing in Basingstoke, qualifying as a mental health nurse.

Following this he settled in the borough. He is the father of two sons Ryan and Sean and he also has six grandchildren.

Alongside his demanding career in nursing, Mr Putty supported his local community by working as a volunteer driver for Hampshire social services.

He also served as a school governor in local primary and secondary schools and helped at Basingstoke Athletic Club — a club both of his sons competed for.

Mr Putty gave up work as a nurse after sustaining an injury and began work in the financial services sector.

Mr Putty has also launched his charity appeal for 2024 to 2025 supporting North Hampshire Prostate Cancer Support Group and the Hampshire and Isle of Wight Community Foundation, two charities that are very close to his heart.

The North Hampshire Prostate Cancer Support Group supported the new mayor during his prostate cancer diagnosis.

The group gives men and their families the opportunity to share their experiences of prostate cancer diagnosis, treatment and its side-effects in a safe and confidential environment.

The Hampshire and Isle of Wight Community Foundation is an independent charitable foundation, of which he is a former trustee.

The foundation is the largest grant maker to specialise in awarding grants across Hampshire.

Mr Putty will represent the borough at events during the year supported by the Mayoress, Marie-Noelle, known as Mano, and the deputy mayor during 2024 to 2025 is Colin Phillimore.
