Sheffield Wednesday nearly out of the woods regarding Danny Rohl future, but face one last fright - opinion

Sheffield Wednesday may be nearing a major boost where the future of manager Danny Rohl is concerned.

Sheffield Wednesday have been facing growing interest in Rohl ahead of the summer, with clubs in the Championship showing interest.

Sunderland have been linked for the past several weeks now; the Black Cats initially shortlisted Rohl earlier this year and links have persisted ever since.

More recently, it was revealed that Hull City were also keen on Rohl after the Tigers sacked Liam Rosenior despite a 7th place finish in the Championship.

It comes after Sheffield Wednesday achieved a 20th place finish under Rohl. His side beat Sunderland 2-0 on the final day to complete their great escape, finishing the campaign on 53 points despite going winless in their first 13 league fixtures.

Sheffield Wednesday nearing huge Danny Rohl boost

Earlier this month, it was revealed that Sheffield Wednesday owner Dejphon Chansiri had held positive talks with Rohl about his immediate future at the club.

Soon after, it was also revealed that Chansiri and Rohl had discussed a new contract for the latter, suggesting that everything was moving in the right direction.

Links to Sunderland and now Hull City though have persisted. But it looks like both clubs are now moving towards appointing other managers.

Hull City are reportedly closing in on appointing former Stuttgart and Hamburg manager Tim Walter, whilst Sunderland are now being linked with Bo Svensson, as well as long-term target Will Still who is without a club.

Alan Nixon also says that Sunderland are set to meet their next possible manager in the ‘next few days’; whilst Rohl remains someone in the Sunderland running, it seems increasingly unlikely that he heads to Sunderland given the fact that others are being more closely linked now.

That, as well as the fact that Sunderland would have to pay up to £10million in compensation to prise Rohl from Hillsborough this summer.

Dejphon Chansiri will be waiting on Sunderland announcement

With Hull City moving towards Walter, it’s only really Sunderland that Chansiri and Sheffield Wednesday need to worry about now.

The Black Cats seem to be keeping their next manager well under wraps and so the Owls face one last fright regarding Rohl’s future, with Sunderland meeting this unnamed manager very soon, according to Nixon.

But once Sunderland’s managerial saga is wrapped up, Sheffield Wednesday can really start to move forward with their summer transfer plans and also their plans for Rohl’s future at the club.

It’ll be a huge sigh of relief for Sheffield Wednesday to see the Black Cats hire another manager and then to secure Rohl’s future.

It could mean a huge summer ahead for the Owls with Rohl staying likely to tempt a lot of out of contract players into staying as well, as well as players who Sheffield Wednesday want to sign in the transfer market.

Expect Chansiri to be keeping a close eye on events at Sunderland, but also expect him to be putting measures in place in case Rohl does (in the seemingly unlikely event right now) leave S6 in the coming days or weeks.
