‘Needed to come off’: Ronnie Whelan says £16m Liverpool player looked exhausted vs Aston Villa

Liverpool picked up another disappointing result against Aston Villa on Monday evening.

The Reds have been off their game for a little while now, and the 3-3 draw with Villa on Monday just about summed the latter part of this season up for the Reds.

Speaking on the Official Liverpool Podcast, Ronnie Whelan has been picking the bones out of Monday’s draw, and he noted how the substitutions Jurgen Klopp made didn’t make much of an impact.

Whelan noted that things went flat after Liverpool’s substitutions, but he did note that Wataru Endo had to go off due to the fact he looked absolutely exhausted against Villa.

Wataru Endo looked exhausted

Whelan spoke about the £16m man and the fact he needed to be taken off.

“As of late the changes have been made and things have gone flat. The pace isn’t the same as when the players are on beforehand. I thought the likes of Endo needed to come off because he looked very heavy-legged, but the changes haven’t helped again,” Whelan said.

Wataru Endo has had a long season

Whelan is right, Endo looked exhausted against Aston Villa on Monday, and it’s hard to blame him.

Endo has had a long season playing in a new league in one of the most intense teams in European football, and he’s worked his socks off.

Unfortunately, it looks as though all of that effort from this season has now caught up with him, and he’s probably now counting down the days before he can get on his summer break and recharge his batteries.

All in all, it has been a very successful debut season from Endo in the middle of the Liverpool midfield, and while he may not play such a key role next season, he can rest easy in the knowledge that he’s done the job he was brought in to do to the best of his ability, proving a lot of people wrong in the process.
