'I would go for': Ally McCoist now shares who has been better this season - Phil Foden or Martin Odegaard

Ally McCoist has now revealed which midfielder he thinks has had the better season: Phil Foden or Martin Odegaard.

According to Jamie Carragher, Phil Foden has been the best player in the Premier League this season.

However, Gary Neville believes Martin Odegaard has been playing at a level above the rest in the league this campaign.

On form, some would argue that Foden and Odegaard have been the two best midfielders in England this season.

McCoist picks who’s been better this season out of Foden and Odegaard

Perhaps some may arrive to a conclusion based on whether Manchester City or Arsenal win the league.

It is quite rare that a player is considered the best in the division if their side fail to win the league title.

In recent history, the likes of Mohamed Salah and Luis Suarez won the PFA Players’ Player of the Year award for Liverpool, despite their teams not winning the league.

Suarez did so in 2014 and Salah won the award in 2018 and 2022.

Ally McCoist believes Phil Foden has been superior to Martin Odegaard this season.

On talkSPORT (9:28 am, 14/05/2024), McCoist claimed: “Both are brilliantly talented football players, similar in the respect that lovely touch on the ball, lovely feel for the ball, lovely awareness, lovely vision, I would have gone, just for this season, I would go for [Phil] Foden. I mean, it’s not a slight against [Martin] Odegaard at all because he has been brilliant.”

“Both of them have been outstanding, Arsenal are having a fantastic season, I just think Foden for me this season. I think he has been absolutely out of this world. I keep saying it. I don’t think I have seen anybody in years receive the ball better.”

Foden has a chance to end such debates against Tottenham

While Ally McCoist has sided with Phil Foden, others might do so with Martin Odegaard.

But in our view, such debates including City’s number 47 and other players might come to a halt if he turns up against Tottenham.

If Phil Foden decides to emerge as Manchester City’s saviour in yet another important game, it might become unanimous that no player has been as decisive as him in the Premier League this season.

Especially considering how Spurs tend to cause City problems, for Foden to potentially help his side beat them in a game that could decide the title will do wonders for his claim to be the league’s best midfielder and all-round performer.
