Rohl must turn to play-off failures to sign 'scary' 8-goal free-agent at Sheffield Wednesday - opinion

Sheffield Wednesday will be looking to bolster all over the pitch this summer.

Sheffield Wednesday face losing a long list of key players over the next few months, though their survival puts them in a good position in negotiations.

The club will be looking to offload some players though, leaving a lot of gaps and significantly weakened squad depth.

No matter what happens, one position they desperately need to improve on is up front.

Not a single Wednesday player managed to reach double figures this season, while Josh Windass and Ike Ugbo managed to finish as the second top scorer – despite missing out on large chunks of the campaign.

With Ugbo returning to Troyes after his loan spell, and Lee Gregory, Mallik Wilks and Michael Smith all potentially on their way out, Danny Rohl needs to start looking at his options.

Dejphon Chansiri could well cough up the cash to bring in some reinforcements this summer, but there could be one player available for free who could become a real bargain.

Sheffield Wednesday should target ‘scary’ Republic of Ireland international

Aaron Connolly joined Hull City from Brighton last summer, but only signed a one-year contract with the club.

The striker enjoyed a brilliant start in the Championship, netting five goals in his first eight matches.

Connolly did score eight goals in 28 appearances and only 13 starts, but soon fell down the pecking order and only managed four appearances since January.

Ozan Tufan and Liam Delap were both preferred to the Republic of Ireland international, despite having a lower goal-to-game ratio.

While new manager Michael Duff could well offer a new contract to Connolly, Sheffield Wednesday should take advantage of his current situation and look to swoop in to sign him on a free transfer.

A statement of intent from Dejphon Chansiri

If anyone can get him back firing and full of confidence then it is definitely Rohl, while he already has experience in a play-off battle and has even scored five goals in the Premier League.

There is likely to be plenty of interest in Connolly this summer, but the Owls shouldn’t hang around in pursuing the ‘scary‘ 24-year-old and could look to land him as soon as his contract is up.

The only real issue for the Yorkshire outfit is his reported £23k-per-week contract, though previous reports did claim that Dejphon Chansiri was willing to splash even more than that on a proven goalscorer earlier in the campaign.

It could be a real statement of intent for Wednesday, who need to drastically improve their transfer business from previous summers.
