'That is pretty likely': Newcastle now on course to sign 'fantastic' £30m PL star this summer - journalist

Journalist Dean Jones believes that one Premier League star is now on course to join Newcastle United this summer despite interest from Chelsea.

Newcastle will be desperate to bring in a number of signings over the summer after a much more difficult campaign for Eddie Howe’s side at St James’ Park.

Newcastle are working to sign Tosin Adarabioyo and Lloyd Kelly at centre-back, but the man behind the defence could also change over the coming months.

The Magpies have had to deal with much of this season without Nick Pope due to injury, and it seems that he could have a new rival next year in the shape of Aaron Ramsdale.

Newcastle signing Aaron Ramsdale looks pretty likely

Ramsdale has spent the majority of this campaign as understudy to David Raya following the Spaniard’s surprise move to Arsenal last summer.

TBR Football previously reported that Arsenal have told Ramsdale that he can leave this summer. And speaking on Ranks FC, Dean Jones has suggested that he looks most likely to be headed for Tyneside.

“Aaron Ramsdale, let’s start with him, because he’s obviously going to be leaving Arsenal. He’s too good to be sitting on the bench, watching David Raya every weekend, so he’s going to seek a transfer and Newcastle are the favourites to sign him. That is pretty likely to happen,” he said.

“I would expect that Aaron Ramsdale does end up at Newcastle, even though Chelsea do also like him.”

A move which benefits all parties

It could definitely prove to be a move which suits all parties, even if Arsenal would ideally prefer to keep hold of Ramsdale and have him pushing Raya.

The Gunners are likely to receive a substantial fee for a player who cost the club around £30 million, while Newcastle will secure a player who has more than proven himself in the Premier League.

Ramsdale has been ‘fantastic’ since moving to Arsenal, and he knows Eddie Howe from his time at Bournemouth earlier in his career.

With his Arsenal future in some doubt, it could be a really good opportunity for Ramsdale to continue to play at a really high level for what could be the best years of his career.
