'The best fit': Carlton Palmer urges 'excellent' player to join Sheffield Wednesday this summer

Carlton Palmer has urged one ‘fantastic’ player to join Sheffield Wednesday.

Sheffield Wednesday are set to begin an overhaul of their squad this summer as they look to improve on their relegation scrap next season.

The Owls still have a long list of players whose contracts will expire this month, though they will be eager to extend the stays of some of them.

However, others will leave on free transfers and will be replaced with fresh faces.

Danny Rohl’s success in the January transfer window bodes well for the summer, having brought in fan favourites in James Beadle, Ike Ugbo andIan Poveda.

Wednesday have already been linked with all three of them ahead of a second move to Hillsborough, with Poveda set to become a free agent himself.

The Colombian’s ‘excellent‘ loan spell at Wednesday has attracted attention though, and now Rohl’s side are likely to face competition from the likes of Sunderland, Burnley and Luton.

Poveda will have the pick of the bunch as he is released by Leeds United, however Wednesday legend Carlton Palmer believes his ‘best fit’ is back at Hillsborough.

Carlton Palmer urges ‘fans’ favourite’ to join Sheffield Wednesday

Speaking to Football League World, he said: “Ian joined Sheffield Wednesday on loan and has quickly become a fans’ favourite. He was part of the squad that stayed in the Championship and was a very integral part of that.

“He played very, very well and all the players speak very highly of Danny Rohl. I think Poveda has to be very careful now. He didn’t have game at Leeds United, he needs to move somewhere where he is going to have game time.

“Of course, Burnley and Luton are going to be in the Championship next season, Sunderland are going to be in the Championship. I think the best fit for him is where he is, Sheffield Wednesday.

“Join a club where you enjoy, he’s become a fans’ favourite. Join a club where you’re playing regular football where you’re enjoying your football, where you’re enjoying playing for the manager.

“It’s not just about the money, you have to look at where you’re going to play your best football, where you’re going to play continually, where the fans enjoy seeing you and where the manager is playing you in your right position, where you’re enjoying your football and you understanding what you’re doing.

“I think still the best fit for him is joining Sheffield Wednesday where he spent the second half of the season on loan and excelled.”

Ian Poveda can’t afford to make the wrong decision now

Ian Poveda’s career has been stunted since joining Leeds United in 2020.

The winger made 14 appearances in the Premier League but never managed to establish himself as a regular for the Whites, while he only netted three goals across two loan spells with Blackburn and Blackpool.

While he failed to score for the Owls, he made a really positive impact on the Owls and made a vital contribution to their survival.

He became a fan favourite and formed a brilliant relationship with the club in such a short amount of time.

Poveda’s next move is a really important one and could determine the rest of his career, and rejoining Wednesday seems particularly risk-free.

Joining a club like Burnley certainly won’t guarantee him game-time, and that seems to be what he needs going into the new season.
