Report: Hammers tried to appoint familiar face who spent 2 years with West Ham before Lopetegui

Julen Lopetegui is widely expected to be the man to replace David Moyes as the new West Ham United manager.

West Ham will part ways with David Moyes at the end of this season, with Julen Lopetegui all set to replace him having been offered a two-year, £7 million deal.

The majority of Hammers fans are on board with the idea of Lopetegui taking over now.

This comes after praise form high profile pundits including the likes of Guillem Balague who lauded his fellow Spaniard.

Moyes worked wonders for West Ham in his four-and-a-half year stint in charge at the London Stadium, but the football that he deployed became so tiresome to watch – it was anti-football at times, and certainly wasn’t conducive with challenging for the top six.

Lopetegui now has the remit of improving on what Moyes has built at West Ham. It seems like the 57-year-old may not have even been given a chance to manage us though, had the Hammers’ first-choice not turned us down…

So Lopetegui wasn’t the Hammers owners’ first choice to replace Moyes it seems.

The West Ham board were apparently looking at someone who knows the club very well indeed…

According to Sport Bild, Edin Terzic was approached by the Hammers owners, but he rejected the chance to replace Moyes.

Our interest in the 41-year-old broke a couple of weeks ago, but it seems like it came to nothing.

Terzic joined West Ham as assistant to Slaven Bilic in 2015 having worked with him at Besiktas previously.

The 41-year-old was an integral part of the management setup which led West Ham to one of our best ever Premier League seasons in the memorable Farewell Boleyn campaign.

However, he left us when Bilic was sacked in 2017, and eventually took over as interim Borussia Dortmund manager in December 2020.

He led them to domestic cup success in May 2021, but wasn’t installed as the permanent manager there until a year later.

Terzic has been a huge success with Dortmund, and he nearly guided them to the Bundesliga title last term.

This season, he has led his team to the Champions League final. Terzic obviously has something very special about him.

I would have liked him at West Ham, but we’ve ended up with Julen Lopetegui instead. That’s not a bad thing by any means, and I’m really excited for an exciting new era under the Spaniard.
