'I nearly said': Gary Neville admits he almost said something that was 'disrespectful' to Aaron Ramsdale

Gary Neville has made a claim about Arsenal star Aaron Ramsdale while discussing a Manchester City player.

The pundit was on duty at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Tuesday night, where Pep Guardiola’s side picked up a 2-0 victory.

Stefan Ortega was the star of the show for Manchester City, and while Neville was singing his praises, he made an interesting claim about Arsenal goalkeeper Ramsdale.

Gary Neville makes claim about Arsenal goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale

Aaron Ramsdale spent about two years as Arsenal’s undisputed number one.

The Englishman has his flaws, but he is still an extraordinary goalkeeper. He is good enough to start for most clubs in the Premier League.

However, at Arsenal, Ramsdale is behind David Raya in the pecking order.

The Spain international got the nod in September last year, and that was a controversial decision at the time. Mikel Arteta came under humongous criticism for dropping Ramsdale for the Brentford loanee.

However, the Arsenal manager’s move has been justified, with Raya winning the Golden Glove award despite not featuring in six Premier League games.

Ramsdale is still a quality backup option for Arsenal, just like Stefan Ortega is for Manchester City.

The German proved his class against Tottenham with a tremendous save after Heung-min Son went through on goal. Pep Guardiola claimed that his stop is the reason why Arsenal aren’t the champions.

Speaking after the game, Gary Neville admitted he almost claimed that Ortega is the best number two in the entire Premier League. But then, he quickly realised that statement would be ‘disrespectful’ to Ramsdale.

He said on The Gary Neville Podcast: “You always need your goalkeeper in a title run-in to produce a performance, to make a save, and Ortega…

“I nearly said at one point in the second half when he came on ‘is he the best number two in the league?’ But I thought that’s probably a bit disrespectful to Ramsdale who’s obviously also a very good number two to Raya.

“But, he (Ortega) is an outstanding number two and he came on in challenging circumstances – Ederson obviously with the concussion – It was an unbelievable moment that one when Son went through, it really was. Wow!”

The latest on Aaron Ramsdale’s Arsenal future

Arsenal star Aaron Ramsdale is just too good to be a number two.

The England international is unlikely to become the first choice at Arsenal as David Raya has proved to be a better fit for the Gunners’ system.

All signs point towards an exit for Ramsdale this summer, and here’s the latest on his future.

TBR Football exclusively revealed in the second week of May that Newcastle United are ready to step up their interest in Ramsdale.

TBR can also confirm that Mikel Arteta will not stop the England international from leaving the Emirates if he opts to do so this summer.

Ramsdale is a fan favourite at Arsenal, and it will be sad to see him go. However, a move away this summer might just be the best thing for all parties involved.
