'Sad': Paul Merson claims £70m Manchester United man sums up a wider Premier League problem

Manchester United were hammered by Crystal Palace in midweek and Paul Merson believes one player has shown a bigger problem in the league as a whole.

Erik ten Hag’s side were well and truly put to the sword by Palace as Oliver Glasner’s new-look outfit simply dismantled the Red Devils.

For United, it was a night that many would argue has been coming and there were some pretty poor displays from individuals.

Of course, the standout nightmare performance came from Brazilian, Casemiro. The midfielder-turned-defender endured a horrendous night, withJamie Carragher insisting he needed to leave the club.

And speaking on the situation with Casemiro, Paul Merson believes the former Real Madrid man’s decline is just where the Premier League is at right now.

Paul Merson makes claim about Casemiro after seeing him v Crystal Palace

Speaking on Sky Sports today about the performance from Casemiro in midweek, Merson commented on how the Brazilian’s decline is an example of where the whole league is going.

“It was a sad day for Casemiro, it was. The man has been an unbelievable footballer, won the Champions League I don’t know how many times, top player, coming towards the end of his career.

“You know, the days I think are long gone now of players playing in the Premier League when they are 36 and 37. You know, the game is so quick now, even at 32 it is coming towards the end, in my opinion,” Merson said.

United paid £70m for Casemiro and put him on huge wages back in the summer of 2022.

However, that decision has been widely criticised and it now looks like the club are paying for it.

Casemiro needs to jet off into the sunshine

One poor season does not make a great player a poor player all of a sudden.

But the longer Casemiro hangs around in Manchester, the more he risks losing some credibility and fans remembering him for this poor spell rather than the brilliant one in Madrid.

Jamie Carragher suggested this on Monday Night Football but a move to the MLS or Saudi would suit Casemiro right now.

Unless he is carrying a major injury, he has shown he simply cannot get about the pitch in a way that is needed at this level.

United, then, need to move him on and move him on fast.
