Report: Spurs now planning talks to sign striker who's 'one of the top 10 players in Europe'

Tottenham Hotspur have a busy summer ahead of them as Ange Postecoglou looks to bolster his ranks ahead of a key season for the club.

Spurs began the 2023/24 campaign brightly and were potential dark horses for the Premier League title at one point.

However, a downturn in form has left Tottenham unable to finish in the top four this season, and Europa League football isn’t a certainty either.

Postecoglou has laid some solid foundations, but there’s a lot of work to do to take Spurs to the next level and back into the Champions League.

Now, according to a report from GiveMeSport, Tottenham are looking to schedule talks to sign a striker who has been deemed “one of the top 10 players in Europe”.

The player in question is Mexico international Santiago Gimenez, who has been in outstanding form for Feyenoord this season.

Postecoglou has reportedly pinpointed the 22-year-old as a priority target this summer, and Spurs are already thinking about holding discussions for the player.

Tottenham are keen to understand the exact terms they need to meet if they want to strike an agreement with Feyenoord over Gimenez, added the report.

Who is Tottenham target Santiago Gimenez?

Gimenez was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina, and began his football journey at Mexican giants Cruz Azul, joining their academy and working his way up the ranks.

Feyenoord decided to sign the forward in 2022 for a reported £4.5million, and he has gone on to shine for the Eredivisie outfit.

Gimenez has 49 goals and 11 assists from just 86 Feyenoord appearances overall, and this term, he has 26 goals and eight assists from 41 outings.

Football Talent Scout‘s Jacek Kulig has compared the left-footer to Manchester City star Erling Haaland, while Goal.com claimed last year that he’s ‘following in the footsteps of (Robin) Van Persie’.

In terms of Gimenez’s style of play, Kulig deemed him a ‘complete forward’ with pace, athleticism, finishing, heading, instinct and movement among his many strengths.

Morris Pagniello, an agent said to be close to Gimenez’s family, told MedioTiempo last year that the forward is ‘one of the top ten players in Europe’.

And in terms of price tag, 90Min reported in April that Feyenoord want around £87million for their asset.

Obviously that’s a huge transfer fee, but with GiveMeSport reporting that Spurs are thinking of selling Richarlison, they could reinvest that money into signing Gimenez.
