Cole Palmer has just equalled Frank Lampard record during Chelsea vs Brighton

Cole Palmer continued his remarkable individual season on Wednesday night by equalling a Frank Lampard record in Chelsea’s 2-1 win against Brighton.

Chelsea travelled to the Amex Stadium in midweek for their penultimate game of the Premier League season. As a result of the victory, the Blues go into Sunday’s final day of the campaign sitting sixth in the division table.

Despite the fair share of criticism that has been fired at Mauricio Pochettino’s side in the last nine months, they’re just one positive result away from qualifying for Europe.

Cole Palmer’s superb headed goal in the 34th minute put visitors Chelsea in front during the first-half.

Afterwards, Christopher Nkunku doubled the lead in the 64th minute with a controlled low finish inside the box. It turned out to be the winner, too.

Danny Welbeck reduced the score to 2-1 in stoppage time to make it a tense finish, but the visitors held on for a deserved three points.

The biggest negative from the game is Reece James was shown a straight red card late on for kicking out at Joao Pedro while on the floor.

Cole Palmer matches Frank Lampard record

Palmer created another little piece of history on Wednesday by equalling the record of Chelsea legend Frank Lampard.

Remarkably, Palmer’s header versus Brighton was his 22nd Premier League goal of the season.

He’s now matched the best scoring Premier League season of Lampard’s career, which was back in the 2009/10 campaign in a title-winning side managed by Carlo Ancelotti. Lampard was a goal machine in the Blues midfield for over a decade, but the most league goals he managed in a single season was 22 goals.

For Palmer to match the Lampard record in his first year at the club, is quite stunning from the 22-year-old attacking midfielder.

Next, he’s got the chance to break it at home to Bournemouth on Sunday in the final match of a memorable individual effort.
