Bruno Guimaraes questions what happened to Newcastle last night with pointed social media post

Newcastle United, as is so often the case, left Old Trafford with nothing on Wednesday night.

While Newcastle did score in injury time to make things interesting towards the closing stages of the 3-2 defeat to Manchester United, it was a huge missed opportunity.

Indeed, it now means Eddie Howe’s side must rely on Chelsea and The Red Devils losing even if they are to beat Brentford on the final day of the Premier League season as they push for European qualification.

Still, as frustrating as some of the defending was at times, there is little doubt Newcastle were unlucky.

Anthony Gordon, who scored Newcastle’s only goal of the game, should surely have been awarded a penalty in the first-half.

The England winger was brought down by Sofyan Amrabat in the box and questioned the decision not to award a spot kick, saying he doesn’t “understand what the point of VAR is” during a post-match interview.

As you can imagine, he wasn’t the only angry Newcastle player.

Bruno Guimaraes hits out at penalty decision during Manchester United vs Newcastle

After the game, an image of the foul was posted by a user on X (formerly Twitter).

Bruno Guimaraes then quoted that post and added an eyes covered emoji as well as one with its mouth zipped…

Newcastle should have had a penalty – but can’t ignore the real problem

It’s obviously hugely frustrating for a decision like that to go against Newcastle.

Still, to blame the defeat on that alone would be foolish.

Some of the defending, namely from Kieran Trippier for Kobbie Mainoo’s opening goal, was absolutely atrocious.

Defend like that and you’re always likely to make life far more difficult for yourselves.

Lacking much conviction going forward too and it all made for pretty grim viewing.

The penalty decision was poor but let’s not ignore the real problems.
