'It's very special': Celtic boss Brendan Rodgers reveals why this title means so much more to him

Celtic won their third Scottish Premiership title in a row on Wednesday evening, defeating Kilmarnock 5-0 at Rugby Park.

Brendan Rodgers’ side sealed the league in emphatic style, recording their biggest away victory of the season.

The Hoops made easy work of the hosts, with talisman Matt O’Riley getting on the scoresheet twice to take his tally to 20 goals for the season.

Speaking to Sky Sports post-match, Rodgers explained why this title win felt even more special than his previous two.

Brendan Rodgers says it’s been a challenging season

It’s not been all plain sailing for Rodgers since returning to Celtic Park last summer but that only made it sweeter, he admitted.

“It’s very special. Obviously, every time you win a league title it feels great but this one definitely feels something special after everything we’ve been through this season and the challenges we’ve had,” the 51-year-old said.

“Also how we finished it because that performance was absolutely incredible. Everything I’d want in a team, with technique and speed and power, I thought our football was immense.”

The former Leicester man was pleased with his side’s hunger and noted that they played as if the season had just kicked off.

“The hunger in the team looked like we were at the beginning of the season, not at the end and that was against a really good side who don’t concede many goals.”

Brendan Rodgers says there’s been a lot of negativity around Celtic this season

Evidently, Rodgers has felt the scrutiny this season as he made multiple references to the difficulties he and his side have faced.

“So pleased for the players because there’s been a lot of negativity around them this season but they stayed with it and kept believing.

“Players came back then the performance level over the last couple of months, under pressure, has been fantastic. I’m very, very proud of them and very happy for the supporters.”

So, with the league now ticked off, the relentless nature of football will force Rodgers and club chiefs into planning for the fast-approaching summer transfer window in the coming days.
