Arsenal can replicate iconic Premier League moment as title race boils down to final day

Arsenal still have a small chance of Premier League glory as they head into the final day of the season.

Mikel Arteta’s side are two points behind Manchester City, meaning that they will need a favour from David Moyes’ team, but his recent record against them is not one to be optimistic about.

No matter what happens in the title race, this young Arsenal side have challenged Man City again, and unlike last season, they are heading into the final game with an outside chance for title glory.

Arsenal were not handed a favour by Tottenham Hotspur as they lost at home to Man City, despite the delight of their fans at the result, but they will be hoping for a miracle now.

Arsenal are in the title race on the final day of the Premier League season.

Arsenal have not sustained too many title challenges in recent years, and it is a testament to Arteta that he is now able to go toe to toe with Pep Guardiola’s Man City.

If Arsenal beat Everton and Man City fail to beat West Ham, Arsenal will be crowned champions. However, a City win would mean they secure their fourth straight Premier League title.

The scenario Arsenal now find themselves in is somewhat similar to 1998, when they also beat Everton to secure the title.

Arsenal won the Premier League in the final home game in 1998

The last time Arsenal had title jeopardy on the line in their final home game was in 1998, as Arsene Wenger won his first Premier League.

Arsenal’s final two games that season were both away from home, but they headed into their final match at Highbury to face Everton, like Arteta’s side will at the Emirates.

However, Arsenal were in the driving seat against the Toffees that time, as they knew a win would seal the triumph, without a need to rely on results elsewhere.

This game then produced one of the most iconic Arsenal moments in Premier League history. Wenger’s side were leading 3-0, en route to the title, then their captain and legend Tony Adams produced a moment of magic.

The centre-back had decided to push forward with just minutes remaining in the final game at Highbury that season, and his centre-back partner Steve Bould had played him through with a long ball.

Adams then took a touch before smashing home with his left foot to leave the result beyond any doubt, and there was an explosion of noise inside Highbury. Their first Premier League title had been delivered, and the icing on the cake was a goal from their captain.

“It’s Adams, would you believe it? That sums it all up,” commentator Martin Tyler exclaimed during the remarkable moment.

The moment was so significant that Adams’ celebration that day has been immortalised with a statue outside the Emirates, and the current squad may now look at it for inspiration heading into the final day.

Arsenal will now face the same club in similar but different circumstances. In their final home game of the season, they have the chance to win the title, and if Man City do find themselves failing to beat West Ham, an Arsenal player now has the chance to write himself into history by scoring just like Adams did.
