'He will regret that': Jason Cundy now says whether Chelsea should sell Reece James after red card

Jason Cundy has been discussing whether Chelsea should sell Reece James this summer.

Reece James has struggled to stay fit this season and was sent off in Chelsea‘s 2-1 win against Brighton & Hove Albion after a kick out.

It was his second red card of the campaign after he was dismissed in the Blues’ 4-1 loss to Newcastle United back in November.

Thankfully for Mauricio Pochettino, his captain‘s recklessness did not come back to haunt the team.

Chelsea went on to concede after James’ dismissal, but the game ended 2-1. The right-back had been praised for the impact he made the match before, but that is now likely to be overshadowed after his lack of discipline at the Amex Stadium.

Jason Cundy on Reece James’ red card

James’ red card could have been really costly for Chelsea in their bid to qualify for the Europa League.

In the end, not too much damage was done to the Blues, but Cundy thinks the 24-year-old’s sending off will impact his chances of going to the Euros.

Despite his injury record and ill-discipline at times, the former Chelsea defender would still not sell James, though.

When it was put to him whether the club should consider offloading the England international by Jamie O’Hara on talkSPORT, Cundy said: “No, it’s a no from me. The point you’ve made is a valid one; he will regret that for a long time. So the point you’ve made about the England squad is absolutely valid.

“He would’ve started probably against Bournemouth at the weekend and [Gareth] Southgate would’ve been looking at that. That is a very expensive red card. It was a red card, can’t defend it.”

Should Chelsea sell Reece James this summer?

It is true. James can be a bit too aggressive at times, while his injury record over the last few seasons is a concern.

Nevertheless, Chelsea should not be in a hurry to get rid of him.

It was only last weekend when the Three Lions star helped his side to earn all three points against Nottingham Forest after assisting Nicolas Jackson’s winner.

The worst punishment for James should be taking the armband off him, and that is only if he continues to pick up silly red cards like his latest one.
