Newcastle United actually equalled Man United's Premier League record last night thanks to Lewis Hall

There are not many positives to take from Newcastle United’s loss to Manchester United, but the performance of Lewis Hall is certainly one of them.

The 19-year-old retained his place in the Newcastle United starting XI, and continued his impressive run of form at left-back. Lewis Hall suddenly looks much more comfortable in a Toon shirt, and fans are starting to see why he is a player with so much potential.

Overall, Newcastle were poor against Man United. There were not many strong performers, but Hall can definitely be happy with his contribution. As can Anthony Gordon, who was the Magpies’ biggest attacking threat.

Lewis Hall scores stunning goal against Manchester United

But it was actually Hall who nearly inspired a comeback, curling a beautiful shot from distance beyond Andre Onana to make it 3-2 in stoppage time. It was a brilliant strike that actually gave Hall his second goal of the season at Old Trafford.

His first came in the Carabao Cup, but this goal on Wednesday night made him part of Premier League history.

Newcastle United equal Premier League record

Hall’s stoppage time strike was his first Premier League goal for Newcastle United, and it equalled a record that Man United have held since the 2012/13 season.

The teenager became the 20th different Newcastle United player to score a Premier League goal this season, equalling the number of different scorers Man United had when they won the title 11 years ago.

Newcastle have been on the brink of equalling that record for a while now, with Tino Livramento becoming the Magpies’ 19th scorer during the 3-0 win over Wolverhampton Wanderers in March.

Who could break the record for Newcastle on Sunday

With one game to play, Newcastle United have a chance to break the record. They need one more different player to find the net against Brentford, as Eddie Howe’s side go in search of a win that could deliver them European football.

But they could also make history too, if a 21st different Toon player can find the net. However, there are not many candidates remaining who could knock the Red Devils off their perch.

The most likely player is Elliot Anderson. He is yet to net his first ever Newcastle goal, and now he has the chance to make history with it if he can score against Brentford. The 21-year-old is probably Newcastle’s only hope, as he has a good chance of starting while he gets into attacking positions.

Another option is Emil Krafth, who has started the Magpies’ last three games and is yet to score this season. However, there is a decent chance that he could be replaced by Fabian Schar in the starting XI.

Other outfield players who have not scored in the Premier League but could be in the Newcastle squad on Sunday are Paul Dummett and Joe White, while I suppose you can’t fully rule out a goal from goalkeepers Martin Dubravka or Nick Pope.

While Newcastle’s main priority is beating Brentford and doing all they can to get into Europe, there is also a chance to make Premier League history during what has been a challenging season.
