Chance creation, 35 touches… Clever Rodgers tactic pays off big for Celtic vs Kilmarnock

Celtic wrapped up the Scottish Premiership title in emphatic fashion last night by thumping Kilmarnock 5-0 at Rugby Park.

Adam Idah, Daizen Maeda, and James Forrest sent the Bhoys on their way to a thumping victory in the first half before Matt O’Riley’s brace set up an evening of joyous celebrations for everyone involved.

Brendan Rodgers’ men haven’t had it all their own way this term; however, they have proved why Celtic deserve to be champions. Regardless, if it wasn’t for the arrival of the first goalscorer in January, their achievement may not have been possible.

Republic of Ireland international Idah arrived on loan from Norwich City to little fanfare in the mid-season window without an option to buy inserted into his agreement; nevertheless, there is an argument to say he has been the Hoops’ most important signing of Rodgers’ second tenure.

Overall, the 23-year-old has registered eight goals and laid on two assists in 17 appearances for Celtic, with last-minute efforts at Hibernian, Motherwell and a late strike at Ibrox cementing his new-found hero status [Transfermarkt].

Last night, Rodgers opted for his physicality and running power over Kyogo Furuhashi’s expert eye for goal, something which proved to be an inspired decision on Celtic’s day of destiny.

Adam Idah’s explosive performance at Rugby Park

Idah showed predatory instincts to net early on in proceedings and settled any lingering nerves; however, his all-round play was something to behold at Rugby Park.

Per Fotmob, the 23-year-old had five shots on goal, maintaining 100% shot accuracy, and completed 17 of his 20 attempted passes (85%). He also created one opportunity and had seven touches in the opposition penalty area from 35 overall.

From a defensive standpoint, Idah helped out his teammates by scurrying back to thwart any Kilmarnock breakaways, completing two clearances, three defensive actions, winning two aerial duels and making a solitary recovery.

Despite being a force to be reckoned with in attack, the Cork-born man isn’t afraid to put himself about and get stuck in for the team’s benefit, which is a quality all supporters can get behind.

With the season now nearing a close, speculation will ramp up over whether he has a long-term future at Parkhead.

Weighing up his loan spell, Celtic should have no hesitation in trying to thrash out a deal, as he has been an excellent asset since joining earlier in the year.

Will that happen? It is too soon to say, though he has silenced any doubt over his capability in green and white, rising to the challenge admirably.
