'Tough one': Dom Howson explains why Rohl shouldn't hand 'fantastic' Sheffield Wednesday ace a new deal

Sheffield Wednesday have been urged to let one ‘fantastic’ player leave for free this summer.

Sheffield Wednesday are yet to tie any of their key players down to new contracts, but are likely well underway with negotiations.

Half of the Owls’ starting line-up faced uncertainty over the future in the final weeks of the season, with the main focus being on avoiding relegation.

Now that they have achieved survival, Wednesday will be desperate to thrash out talks with those they wish to keep hold of this summer.

Reports have claimed that the club are alreadyin discussions with Josh Windass, while Barry Bannan has repeatedly said that he has no intention of leaving.

While the likes of Liam Palmer, Will Vaulks and Dominic Iorfa are also out of contract, journalist Dom Howson believes there is one first-team regular that shouldn’t be offered a new deal.

Dom Howson explains why Marvin Johnson should leave

Writing on X, he said: “Players I’d like to see #SWFC tie down to new deals: Bannan, Windass, Palmer, Vaulks, Bernard, Iorfa,Paterson (club option).

“Hopefully they get Beadle, Poveda and Ugbo back for next season too.”

He then added: “Tough one with Marvin Johnson. Proven to be one of Darren Moore’s best signings and played his part in the great escape. But I would let him go now as he’s going to be 34 in December and I have got a feeling DR will want to add more pace and youth in the wide areas.”

The 33-year-old deserves one more year at Sheffield Wednesday

Marvin Johnson has had a ‘fantastic’ season under Danny Rohl and has made 25 starts since the German was appointed.

The 33-year-old was even the subject of a £1 million bid from Ipswich Town back in January, but the Owls turned it down.

Surely Johnson’s brilliant campaign under Rohl and their insistence on not accepting a seven-figure bid only four months ago has earned him an extra year at the club.

While he is approaching his 34th birthday, he has been in impressive form under Rohl and adds some very important squad depth to the backline.

His versatility means he has played all along the left-side for Wednesday and is the only player who can comfortably fill in at the left-side of defence, while Akin Famewo is much preferred in the middle.

If Johnson wants to stay, then it seems like the smart idea to offer him a one-year contract extension.

However, it won’t be the end of the world if he doesn’t. No doubt Rohl will have his eye on some of his own arrivals to take his place.
