Tottenham could finally replace Dele Alli by signing 'wonderful' £25m player this summer - opinion

Tottenham are a decent side under Ange Postecoglou, but there are a few things that this team are lacking.

Spurs’ defensive frailties are well-documented, but, while Tottenham are an attacking side, there is also an ongoing issue in the final third.

Harry Kane, of course, hasn’t been properly replaced as of yet, but perhaps that wouldn’t be such a problem if their midfield players chipped in with a few more goals.

Tottenham lacking goals from midfield

Spurs’ midfield players just aren’t scoring goals at the moment.

Tottenham’s midfield players have scored just 10 goals between them this season, with the top scorer from that position being James Maddison with just four.

To put that into some context, 12 teams in the Premier League have at least one midfield player who’s scored more than four goals, while the likes of Arsenal and Manchester United have multiple midfield players who have surpassed that tally.

Tottenham ought to know better than any other club that goals from the midfield can be incredibly valuable. After all, in their heyday, Dele Alli was one of the most dangerous attacking players in all of England.

Spurs haven’t quite replaced the goals in their midfield since selling Alli to Everton, but, this summer, Tottenham could do just that by signing Matt O’Riley.

Matt O’Riley could replace Dele Alli

Tottenham need a goalscoring midfielder, and it looks as though Matt O’Riley could be just what the doctor ordered.

Spurs have been linked with O’Riley in recent days, and it’s not hard to understand why.

O’Riley now has 17 league goals for Celtic this term, and his style is becoming more and more reminiscent of a peak Dele Alli.

His finishing has improved massively this season, as has his positional sense, and if he joined this Spurs side, he would surely add some much-needed firepower to a midfield that has been lacking.

O’Riley wasn’t much of a goalscorer the last time he worked with Ange Postecoglou at Celtic, but, after seeing what he can do this season, the Australian ought to be able to get him firing if he signs him for Tottenham.

The ‘wonderful£25m man could be just the player Tottenham need to add a new dynamic to their attack.
