A’ja Wilson admits that she has a ways to go to be considered in the GOAT debate. However, one day she hopes to be a part of that conversation.

Wilson recently sat down with Boardroom and discussed her goals for her career. One of them is being the greatest women’s basketball player of all time.

“I would love that,” A’Ja Wilson said. “I would love to have my name mentioned in conversations when you’re talking about the greatest women’s basketball player to ever play.”

The 27-year-old Wilson is off to a heck of a start. During her college days at South Carolina she won a national title and was named the National Player of the Year.

In her first six seasons in the WNBA, A’Ja Wilson has won two WNBA titles, two WNBA Finals MVP awards, two WNBA MVPs and plenty of other accomplishments.

Still, Wilson feels like she is a ways away from being considered the GOAT.

“In my eyes, I still have a lot more that I have to do to even be in that conversation, because I feel like they’ve only seen the tip of the iceberg,” A’Ja Wilson said. “I feel like I’m only letting people see pieces as I’m getting throughout my career, and I’m like, ‘Oh, just wait. Just wait until I’m really trying to get there and work towards that.’”

In 2021, ESPN ranked the greatest women’s basketball players of all-time. The website listed the top 10 as: Diana Taurasi, Tamika Catchings, Cynthia Cooper, Maya Moore, Lisa Leslie, Sheryl Swoopes, Lauren Jackson, Sue Bird, Candace Parker and Sylvia Fowles.

Wilson is confident she can be a part of that list one day, but it’s going to take lots of work.

“Right now, obviously, I’m having fun with it and I love what I do, but I still feel like I have so much to give,” Wilson said. “Yea, I would love my name to be in those conversations always, because I worked my butt off to get to that point, but I still feel like I have a long ways to go to even think about it.

“So GOAT in training – heavy on in training, because I still have so much to give, so much to really still prove.”

She also detailed specifics as far as what she must do to be considered one of the greatest players ever.

“I still have to win more. I feel like I’ve still go to win,” Wilson said. “It’s cool, it’s nice, but I still feel like there’s people out there saying it ain’t good enough. And that right there is all I need.”
